Gregory Bennet Interview

INTERVIEW WITH GREGORY BENNET FROM TheCelebrityCafe.com ARCHIVES

DM) What is your songwriting process?

GB) My songwriting process is very detailed. I usually start with a basic groove, including the drums & bass. Next, I arrange the chord progression that will create the appropriate mood or emotion. On top of all that, I begin to improvise as I get into the swing of things. After all of my improvising, I begin to swing into the main melody line. If It's a vocal song, I write lyrics according to the mood of the groove. Usually I write the chorus first, then the 1st & 2nd verses. Selecting the appropriate instrumentation also adds to the character of a song, whether it's an instrumental or vocal arrangement. In most cases, I usually can hear the entire arrangement in my head before I record the tracks. Then come all of the brainstorming & God-given inspiration & creativity. I totally enjoy it.

DM) Do consider yourself a religious man?

GB) I would consider myself more of a spiritual man. I recognize GOD as my heavenly Father, Lord & Savior through His son Jesus Christ, who died for our sins. I maintain a personal relationship with Him.

DM) How do you maintain a personal relationship with Him?

GB) Through prayer/meditation/reading his word & always thanking him for blessing me with all of my many talents, esp. my music capabilities. For without him, none of this would be possible.

DM) How do you choose the singers you work with?

GB) I choose the singers I work with according to their versatility & their ability to create. A talented singer can augment & add some flexibility to the main melody line. That's what makes a song more entertaining, exciting & pleasant to the human hear, depending on the type music.

DM) But you're not worried about being overshadowed by your singers?

GB) No. I am confident that their great performances is a testament of my capable writing, composing, producing & arranging. I get feedback all the time in regard to the production behind the singers' performances. I look forward to your reply.

DM) What first inspired you to start in music?

GB) My Inspiration to play music started when I was a little 4yr.old kid when my dad played jazz & R&B albums all the time in the home. I begin to realize my natural ability for rhythmic instruments at the age of 9. I played the drums & other percussion instruments for many years. As I matured, I acquired an ear for textured tones, complex rhythms, harmony, orchestration & melodies. That maturation process led to my playing piano & other keyboard instruments. And now with the height of technology, I am able to present my music on the WWW in a very professional matter.

DM) How has the net affected your career?

GB) The Internet has made a positive impact on my music career. I utilize the net as my worldwide stage. It gives me the opportunity to collaborate with other artists around the world. I've gotten good reviews from members of the entertainment industry, for example, my webpage was recently visited by an independent filmmaker. My music was submitted to the filmmaker this week. The Internet is the best medium for DIY, unsigned & indie artist to showcase their work.

DM) Do you worry that the focus goes on the singer as opposed to the composer?

GB) No, I do not worry about that. Since I am showcasing my work as an up-&-coming/DIY composer/producer, I believe that my work will be judged on the overall quality of the production. In fact, the singer have been getting great feedback, due to my good arranging & producing skills.

DM) Your music might be in a film?

GB) Yes. The deal isn't finalized yet. My webpage was visited by an independent filmmaker called Dominfilms. They sent me an e-mail, asking me to send them a copy of my music. I'm very positive that this will be a successful venture.
