Joan Baez Torked at Military

Folk singer Joan Baez was snubbed by the army. At least, that's how she feels about being dropped from a concert for returning troops from Iraq and Afghanistan. Baez, an anti-war activist, has written to The Washington Post, telling the paper that she was banned from performing at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, though fellow singer John Mellencamp had invited her. Baez said that she didn't hesitate to accept Mellencamp's invite for the Friday performance. And when she was dropped, Baez said that the army never gave her a reason.

Later, the Walter Reed Medical Center issued an email statement saying that Baez's invite was too short of a notice and that including her would mean modifying the show.

Baez's manager, Mark Spector, has fired back, telling the press that Mellencamp gave the invitation way back in March and had already handled all the arrangements.

Mellencamp himself wasn't given a reason for the ban on Baez, saying, "They didn't give me a reason why she couldn't come. We asked why and they said, 'She can't fit here, period.'"
