Netflix cuts ‘Nip/Tuck’ deal

Netflix has brokered a four-year deal with Warner Bros. Domestic TV Distribution for the web streaming rights to all 100 episodes of the provocative FX series Nip/Tuck, which finished its six-season run on the cable network in March.

According to an article on Variety.com, “The pact also gives Netflix streaming rights to selected other Warner Bros. skeins, including Pushing Daisies, Veronica Mars and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.”

Despite the fact that FX has several TV series already available for web streaming on its site, this agreement is the first time that Warner Bros. has made a conventional syndication-style off-network acquisition pact.

In addition, Netflix is reportedly shelling out “cable-level off-net coin” for the rights to Nip/Tuck, which are said to be worth more than $200,000 per episode over the life of the accord.

"This agreement breaks new ground for both of us in the area of subscription, commercial-free streaming of first cycle syndication network and cable TV shows," said Robert Kyncl, Netflix's Vice President of content acquisition.

The Netflix contract is a light at the end of a long tunnel for Warner Bros. in relation to Nip/Tuck because the studio has labored for years to find an off-network locale for the racy series about two daring plastic surgeons.

The Variety.com article goes on to say that, “The show was a tough sell because it was so closely associated with FX, which made the rerun package less attractive to rival cablers, and because it frequently pushed the envelope on sexual content as well as its depictions of surgical procedures.”

Yet it was those very features that made Nip/Tuck such an attractive procurement for the online movie subscription service, which caters to movie enthusiasts who aren’t afraid of racy content. Factor in that Netflix doesn’t have to worry about advertiser concerns, and the union looks like a match made in heaven.

Nip/Tuck premiered on FX on July 22, 2003 and concluded its six-season run on March 3, 2010. The series revolves around McNamara/Troy, a plastic surgery practice in Miami and then Los Angeles. It follows the procedures as well as the personal and professional issues of its founders Sean McNamara, played by Dylan Walsh, and Christian Troy, played by Charmed alum Julian McMahon.
