'The Green Lantern' highest grossing film on Friday

The Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds hit theatres yesterday. Hollywood's newest superhero movie brought green not only to the big screen, but to the box office as well.

The Green Lantern pulled in $21.6 million dollars in its opening day alone, making it the highest grossing film of the day. According to Gather, the film also earned an estimated $3.4 million from Thursday's midnight showings, bringing its earnings to $25 million. The film is expected to earn a total of roughly $55 million this weekend.

Entertainment Weekly reported that Jim Carrey's newest film, Mr. Popper's Penguins, which also opened yesterday, came in second place, earning around $6.4 million.

JJ Abrams' newest film Super 8 earned the third most money on Friday at about $6 million. Super 8 was last weekend's highest earning movie. Combined with yesterday's earnings, Super 8 has grossed a total of about $57.5 million.

X-men: First Class came in fourth, grossing about $3.4 million, and The Hangover Part II came in fifth, earning approximately $3.2 million.
