‘The Voice’ recap: Quarter Finals Round 2

Now, we have a voice on The Voice.

At the conclusion of last Tuesday’s live episode of The Voice, voting lines opened for the first time to secure our favorite artists on Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton’s team. In this week’s competition, we are able to vote to again, this time to keep a member of Cee Lo Green and Adam Levine’s teams.

Hosted by Carson Daly, The Voice is a refreshing alternative to other talent-based reality competitions. The selection process involved these celebrities listening with their backs to the contestants and selecting team members based on the merits of vocal quality to then coach to stardom. Previous episodes featured battle rounds with duets of artists on the same team and the coach selecting the better of the two to move on. These teams were reduced to four per celebrity. Since last night’s episode Aguilera and Shelton’s teams are down to two people each, a fate that Green and Levine’s members will meet next week.

The episode kicked off with the results for Aguilera’s team. America’s votes saved Beverly McClellan, a soulful rock singer and Aguilera herself saved the powerhouse Frenchie Davis. This decision sent Raquel Castro and Lily Elsie home with Aguilera tearfully repeating how much she loved them and how talented they are.

In team performances, Greens’s team performed a fun rendition of “Everyday People” complete with 1970’s attire and Levine’s team performed “With a Little Help From My Friends” backed by a gospel choir.

For the solo performances, on Green’s team Vicci Martinez wowed with her rendition of “Jolene”, it was soulful, moving and just darn good. Tori and Taylor performed “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” with a lot of fanfare. Curtis Grimes, a country singer, sang “Addicted to Love” and Nakia sang “Sex on Fire” with his intense voice complete with actual fire being twirled from sexy dancers behind him.

On Adam’s team, Javier Colon performed “Angel”, playing it on the piano and sounding like an angel himself. Casey Weston played guitar and delivered a strong performance of “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree.” The shy Devon Barley sang “Stop and Stare” and Jeff Jenkins sang “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” a song special to him as he went through tough times after his mother passed away.

Shelton’s team had to wait until the end of the two-hour episode to find out their fate. America saved Dia Frampton, which is not so shocking, as her video was the most downloaded off of iTunes of all the performers last week. Shelton saved Xeina who has a unique, raspy quality in her voice coupled with youthful innocence and room to grow as an artist. This choice forced Blake to send the men on his team, Patrick Thomas and Jared Blake, home.

America has until Monday to vote. The videos are available on the NBC site and on iTunes to download so if you missed last night’s episode, you still have time to use your ‘voice.’
