‘Jersey Shore’ tax credit in jeopardy

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is considering vetoing the $420,000 film tax credit that the state’s Economic Development Authority gave to the producers of MTV’s Jersey Shore last week.

According to NJ.com, Christie said in a press conference Tuesday that he was surprised by the decision, which has been widely criticized since it was enacted. Christie himself has been a critic of the show and the previously awarded tax credits.

The Associated Press reported that Christie originally said that he would not be able to veto the credit, but has now said that he can. He will make a decision after he does a review.

The show’s producers were given a tax credit previously for the 2009 inaugural season, but Christie put it on hold for the 2010 season to help close the state’s budget deficit. This move is to try to reinstate it.

Officials from Seaside Heights have told NJ.com that the show has been a major boost to their economy as people come to visit the scenes of Snooki and the Situation’s hang outs.
