2013 Tony Award nominations announced: ‘Matilda’ scores Best Musical nomination, Nora Ephron’s ‘Lucky Guy’ competes for Best Play

The 2013 Tony Award nominees were announced this morning with Kinky Boots leading the way with 13 nominations. Matilda: The Musical came in a close second with 12 nods.

The Best Musical category includes just four nominees, including Matilda, A Christmas Story, The Musical, Bring It On: The Musical and Kinky Boots. Bring It On was only nominated in two categories.

Nora Ephron’s Lucky Guy was nominated in the Best Play category. The play, which was Ephron’s final work, earned six nominations, including one for Best Lead Actor in a Play for Tom Hanks’ performance.

Lucky Guy will compete with Richard Greenberg’s The Assembled Parties, Colm Toibin’s The Testament of Mary and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang for Best Play.

The Best Revival of a Musical nominees include Annie, Pippin, Rogers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella and The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Cinderella scored nine nominations in total, just behind Pippin’s 10. However, Annie’s only nomination came in this category.

Golden Boy, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, The Trip to Bountiful and Orphans were nominated for Best Revival of a Play.

This year’s Tonys will be held at Radio City Music Hall on June 9. CBS will air the ceremony.
