‘Iron Man 3’ crosses $1 billion worldwide

While some moviegoers have already moved on to Star Trek Into Darkness, audiences are still flocking to see Tony Stark in action in Iron Man 3. The Marvel film has now crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Robert Downey Jr.-starring film reached $990.5 million internationally by Wednesday and hit $1 billion on Thursday. It has hit $300 million in North America alone.

Iron Man 3 is now the second-highest grossing superhero movie of all time, just behind The Avengers. That film finished with $1.5 billion worldwide.

“To an extent, It's a sign of the times,” Disney's head of distribution Dave Hollis told The Wrap, in reference to the film’s $700 million foreign total. “But we had a great movie that was embraced all around the world as the summer's first blockbuster. We had that incredible May Day, the word of mouth was terrific and we're still seeing the effects of that.”

Iron Man 3 has also made $102 million in China, where audiences are getting to see a special version. The film was a co-production with China’s DMG Entertainment.

Iron Man 3 needed 24 days to hit $1 billion, while The Avengers took 19 days. Both films are members of the elite club of 16 films that have reached $1 billion worldwide.

The all-time highest-grossing film of all time is still 2009’s Avatar with $2.7 billion.
