‘Psych’ recap: ‘No Trout About It’

The Psych season 7 finale, “No Trout About It,” Shawn, Gus, Juliet, and Lassiter try to keep their jobs when a new consultant shows up at the police department.

The finale starts with Henry at a marathon, where he meets a woman named Felicia, who wants to run with him in the race. Meanwhile, Shawn and Gus are in the Blueberry, chasing someone on a motorbike. The person goes through the race and almost runs over Henry, but Felicia saves him by pushing him out of the way. Henry questions, “What kind of idiot drives down a public pathway?” Shawn and Gus come driving through right after and Shawn sees Henry and says “Hey, that’s my dad. Hey dad!” Henry is not amused. Lassiter and Juliet are also chasing the person and the two cars end up crashing into each other.

They all end up in Chief Vick’s office after the accident. She tells them the runners are upset, and she’s right. Various runners, including Henry, are yelling at the cops. The mayor is sending over a consultant, Harris Trout (Anthony Michael Hall) because of the mistakes the police department has made. Trout comes in and talks about his credentials, he won’t shake Lassiter’s hand and makes Gus uncomfortable by being silent. Trout tells them all they’re fired unless they explain why they shouldn’t be fired. He says he doesn’t believe in psychics, and Shawn tries to impress him, but it doesn’t work. Trout then asks them to tell him everything that happened in the case.

Shawn begins the recount of their day, starting with him and Gus hanging out at the Psych office. A man, Leo Quinn, comes to the office and asks for help finding his own murderer. Leo says he was poisoned by something called Compound 1080 , and Shawn and Gus take him to the hospital. Gus freaks out, even though the doctor says Quinn’s condition is not contagious. The doctor says the poison will kill Leo within 48 hours. Trout comments on the case and throws away everyone’s donuts. He says they didn’t call the police first, so they didn’t follow procedure. Shawn says he did, and is seen calling Juliet, but he doesn’t report the case. Trout asks about their relationship and Lassiter and Juliet argue. McNab comes in with some sandwiches, and Lassiter mentions McNab is also a stripper, which surprises the Chief.

Shawn continues his story. Leo talks about what he wanted to do in life and mentions he’s a lawyer. He says he has to pick up his wife Rita at the airport, so Shawn and Gus volunteer to go pick her up. They’re surprised by how attractive she is, and they introduce themselves and tells her about Leo. She doesn’t seem sad about what’s happening to Leo, and Shawn notes she didn’t have any airline tags on her luggage. Shawn says he believes Rita married Leo so she could stay in the U.S. Shawn called Rita’s family and learned she hadn’t been back home to Mexico in 2 years. Shawn and Gus went to Rita and Leo’s house to question Rita. It’s mentioned again that they didn’t contact the police, though they try to claim they did. Shawn and Gus find Rita dead on the kitchen floor.

Lassiter takes over the story saying Shawn called him about Rita’s death. Shawn says they opened Rita’s bag and finds a cell phone, with a message from a man named Chuck. They also found products with tags still on them in her room. Shawn and Gus tell Leo about Rita’s death and question him about Rita and his poisoning. Leo says his office had a break in a few days before, though nothing was stolen. He demands to take them there so he doesn't have to stay at the hospital. At his office, Shawn notices someone tried to get into a filing cabinet. Leo says a key to a safety deposit box for a rich client is gone, and says there is 10 million in diamonds in the box. The diamonds are gone, but the bank employee says no one signed in to take anything out of the box. They look at the security tapes and find out a man named Charles Sax, an ex-bank employee, and another unknown man took the diamonds. They think Sax is actually Chuck, and he was having an affair with Rita. They look for Sax at a hotel under the name Victor Mannis. Sax tells them he will tell them about Mannis, his partner, but is shot before he can say anything. Afterward, Shawn and Gus take Leo back to the hospital. The next day, they go to back to ask him more questions, but Leo is dead.

The next day, they find out Leo left them his ashes, which they were planning on spreading for him later. Unfortunately when they crashed, the ashes ended up getting on Juliet and Lassiter, who panic when they figure out it wasn’t cake mix, as Shawn had claimed. Lassiter attacks Shawn, but Trout gets them back on track. Leo left them a note too that told them to look into an old client, Curtis Stanzen. They go to question him with Juliet and Lassiter, but he comes out from the backyard on his motorcycle. Both cars chase him till they wreck into each other. They thought Stanzen had escaped, but find him thrown from his motorcycle, dead. They also discover he was the man who helped steal the diamonds with Sax. They notice he has yellow eyes, which comes from being poisoned by Compound 1080. The Chief says it’s true given the toxicology report. Trout questions them asking who the murderer is, since all the suspects are dead. They think there is a fourth person involved, but Shawn figures out Leo is the killer.

Shawn picks up the report and says Stanzen had all the symptoms of Compound 1080 poisoning, unlike Leo. Shawn says Leo wanted the diamonds, but he wanted a way to get rid of his accomplices and make it so he couldn’t be a suspect. His doctor was in on it, until Leo killed him. Leo also killed Rita and Stanzen, while Stanzen killed Sax. The team tries to leave to go find Leo, but Trout stops them and suspends them all from the case. He says they didn’t follow any police procedures. The gang ignores Trout’s suspension and goes to the airport and arrests Leo. When they return, they discover Chief Vick received a six month suspension, but she says she’s proud of them for doing the right thing. Trout fires McNab and says he is the Interim Chief of Police now. He says he won’t hire psychics, and Lassiter is not the head detective anymore.

Quotes and Comments:

“You married a felon you helped put in jail.” “Come on! Rehabilitated felon. Because the system works. At least I'm not a part-time stripper like McNab!” (Juliet and Lassiter after he talks about Juliet and Shawn’s relationship.

I thought this was a good season finale of Psych. I was sad to see Chief Vick suspended, but it gives her time to spend with her family, and she stood up for the team, which is great. I thought Anthony Michael Hall did a good job as Trout, though I’m not looking forward to him being the Chief. I’m wondering how next season will go now that Shawn and Gus aren’t consultants. They do get cases often that aren’t from the police, but they won’t technically be working with Lassiter and Juliet now. I think they’ll all probably still share information and work together sometimes, despite Trout’s decision.

The two-hour Psych musical special will air in December on USA.
