Angelina Jolie's surgeon blogs about star's double mastectomy

Actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie made headlines earlier this week when news broke of her preventative double mastectomy. Now her surgeon is speaking out about her famous patient’s medical procedures and hopeful spirit.

Dr. Kristi Funk of the Pink Lotus Breast Center wrote an extremely detailed blog post, which explains the discovery of the BRCA gene in Jolie, the surgeries, and the recovery process. The series of procedures began on February 2, with the first major surgery on February 16. Funk writes that Jolie’s partner, actor Brad Pitt, remained by her side throughout the process. Jolie’s spirits were high.

"On day four after her mastectomies, I was pleased to find her not only in good spirits with bountiful energy,” Funk wrote, according to People Magazine , “But with two walls in her house covered with freshly assembled storyboards for the next project she is directing.”

Both Jolie and Pitt’s hopes were realized when the pathology reported the actress’ breast tissue was benign. "It's such a wonderful relief to come through this and not have the specter (of breast cancer) hanging over our heads," Pitt said, as reported by New York Daily News reports.

Jolie’s concern for her future health stems from the death of her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, to ovarian cancer. Both Jolie and Funk aim to educate women to seek out their family history and take preventative measures against breast and ovarian cancer if necessary.
