Arnold Schwarzenegger in talks to star in ‘Toxic Avenger’ remake

Well, this is weird. Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose post-Governator acting career got off to a rough start when The Last Stand flopped, is in talks to star in a remake of the ‘80s cult classic The Toxic Avenger.

The new film will be directed by Steve Pink, who directed Hot Tub Time Machine. Pink and Daniel C. Mitchell wrote the script, notes The Hollywood Reporter. Akiva Goldsman and Richard Saperstein are producing, while International Film Trust is selling the project at Cannes.

The Toxic Avenger was made in 1984 and featured a nerdy boy who falls into a radioactive mess, then decides to fight bad guys. In the new version, the boy is a teen who tries to impress his high school crush and joins an environmental club. He goes to a factory and falls into radioactive materials there.

“Moviegoers around the world were thrilled when Arnold Schwarzenegger returned to acting so effortlessly filling the gap that he left behind,” producer and IFT co-founder Michael Benaroya said in a statement posted at Deadline. “He is the ultimate action hero with a natural comedic versatility and will be pitch perfect in The Toxic Avenger.”

Production on the new Toxic Avenger will start in the fall.

Schwarzenegger has lined up several projects after he left the California governor’s office. He already appeared in The Last Stand, which had disappointing box office numbers. His next film is with Sylvester Stallone and titled Escape Plan. He’s also going to do Terminator 5, Triplets and The Legend of Conan.
