John Brolin, Benicio Del Toro and Katherine Waterston are latest actors to join Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘Inherent Vice’

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice goes before the cameras this month, but that doesn’t mean that he’s done casting. Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro have all reportedly joined the project, while Katherine Waterston has snagged the female lead.

Waterston, the daughter of former Law & Order star Sam Waterston, was the latest to join the project, Deadline reported Thursday. She’ll star as Shasta, the ex-girlfriend of Joaquin Phoenix’s Doc. She was a hipster who's gone straight with Mickey Wolfmann, a real estate mogul Doc has to protect from Shasta and her lover.

Del Toro was linked to the project earlier this month when The Wrap reported that he was in talks. The Oscar winner would get to play an attorney who is always trying to get Doc out of trouble.

Earlier this week, Brolin boarded the project, Deadline confirmed. Brolin will make the film before he goes off to promote Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, Old Boy and Labor Day, films that are all coming out this fall.

The rest of the star-studded cast includes Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, Josh Brolin, Martin Short and Jena Malone. Sean Penn is also reportedly interested in a part.

Anderson’s previous film was 2012’s The Master. Inherent Vice is a Warner Bros. co-production and is based on Thomas Pynchon’s novel.

Waterston is the only relative unknown in the cast. She has had supporting parts in Taking Woodstock and Michael Clayton. She just finished work on The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby.
