Justin Timberlake to play music executive Neil Bogart in ‘Spinning Gold’

Just because Justin Timberlake is back on the charts with The 20/20 Experience doesn’t mean that he’s abandoning acting. The “Mirrors” singer has signed on to star in Spinning Gold and will even go to the Cannes Film Market to help sell it to distributors.

Spinning Gold is a biopic on Neil Bogart, the music executive who founded Casablanca Records, a label famed for its disco artists during the 1970s. He died in 1982 at age 39. According to Variety, Timberlake has been linked to the film since 2011, but now that Mark Damon’s Foresight Unlimited has signed on to produce and finance, production can start next year.

Foresight is handling international sales for the film, while CAA is representing the U.S. distribution. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Timberlake is set to attend the launch party for the project at Cannes.

RCA Records is going to release the film’s soundtrack. A director has not been hired yet, but the script was penned by Bogart’s son Timothy Scott Bogart. Producers include Timberlake, Damon, Laurence Mark and Gary A. Randall.

Bogart helped launch the careers of Curtis Mayfield, KISS, Bill Withers, Donna summer, Gladys Knight and many more. He also co-founded Boardwalk Records. “Neil Bogart was a fascinating individual whose vision, drive and passion brought us some of the most influential music of our time,” Timberlake said in a statement.
