Madonna sells Fernand Leger painting for over $7 million

Pop star Madonna is also an art collector and decided to sell a painting by Fernand Leger that she has owned for over two decades to help raise money for girls’ education.

Lerger’s 1921 painting Three Women at the Red Table went for $7.2 million at a Sotheby’s sale in New York that focused on Impressionists and other modern artists on Tuesday. According to The Independent, the sale brought in a total of $230 million. Sotheby’s did not say who bought Madonna’s painting.

The Associated Press reports that Madonna decided to sell it to “trade something valuable for something invaluable,” which is girls’ education in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other Asian countries. The proceeds are going to the singer’s Ray of Light Foundation for the cause.

Madonna has owned the painting since 1990 when she bought it at Sotheby’s for $3.4 million.

She celebrated the sale on Facebook, writing “I Hope to make many girls smile like Malala all around the world! Thanks to the amazing sale of my painting at Sotheby's we can make this happen soon! Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen! Art equals Revolution!”

She also included a photo of Malala Yousafzai, the 15-year-old Pakistani girl who was targeted by the Taliban for promoting girls’ education.
