Matthew Perry talks about drug use during ‘Friends’ years (Video)

Former Friends actor Matthew Perry has dedicated himself to helping others get over drug addictions, which he has also had experience dealing with. This week, he spoke about his trouble with addiction, particularly during his years on the incredibly popular NBC sitcom.

During an interview with ABC News this week, the actor said that he had tried to hide it from his costars. “I think I was pretty good at hiding it, but eventually people were aware,” he said, reports Us Weekly.

Perry dealt with an addiction to Vicodin in 1997 by doing a 28-day rehab program and credited specialist Earl Hightower with saving his life several times. “The treatment is all-encompassing,” he said.

Despite that, in 2001, he went into rehab again, but this time for more than just a Vicodin addiction. He also needed to stop his addictions to methadone, amphetamines and alcohol.

“If you're thrown from treatment to the outside world, sometimes it's too bumpy,” he said, notes CBS News.

Perry recently opened a sober house, which is meant to help men make a successful transition from rehab to the real world. “The thing that I'm most proud of in my life is that if a stranger came up to me and said, 'I can't stop drinking. I can't stop drinking. Can you help me?' I can say, 'Yes, I can help you,’” he told ABC News.

Perry most recently starred on the NBC sitcom Go On, which did not get renewed.
