Moms are now breadwinners in 40% of American households

According to a study of US census data by the Pew Research Center, women were the chief or only source of income in more than 40% of households in 2011.

This number is a drastic increase from only 11% in 1960, according to Telegraph.

These women are not earning any measly income, either: the median income of families whose primary earner was a woman was $80,000, much higher than the national median of $57,100 of all families with children.

Of the women in the study, 5.1 million were married with children and 8.6 million were single mothers.

Approximately 25% of married mothers were making more money than their spouses, according to NY Daily News.

Though the general trend shows an increase of women in the work-force, the difference between incomes earned by married mothers and single mothers was drastic.

In the 8.6 million households supported by single mothers, the median income was only $23,000.

Despite the obvious increase of mothers in the workforce, people remain unsure of the benefits and negative effects.

Approximately half of the people surveyed thought it was better if mothers stayed home with children, according to the Washington Post.

About 75% said that working as a mother makes raising children harder, and about 50% thought it was bad for marriages.
