NBC: ‘Smash’ & ‘The New Normal’ are gone, ‘Community’ lives on

Out of all the networks, NBC has been the busiest in the last few days, which makes sense since it’s the one in most need of changes. Smash and The New Normal were among the flurry of shows were cut Friday, although somehow Community gets to live for another season.

Ryan Murphy’s The New Normal was part of the networks attempt to build Tuesdays as a new night for comedy, but every single show that was part of that line-up is dead. Murphy’s show was the last left standing, but was later cancelled, notes TVByTheNumbers.

Go On was already cancelled before news of New Normal’s demise broke. Also gone are 1600 Penn,Whitney and Guys with Kids.

TV.com reproted that Smash was also cancelled. That’s no surprise at all, since the show was pushed to Saturdays after just a couple of episodes during its second season.

Fans of the Greendale Community Students had to be happy to see Joel McHale tweet that Community got a fifth season. Hopefully, it turns out better than the 13-episode fourth season, which was under new showrunners who appeared to be getting the hang of it by the end.

With all these sitcoms getting cut, there will be plenty of new shows on NBC for the 2013-2014 season. The Blacklist with James Spader got picked up, which director Joe Carnahan called “badass.”

Hitfix notes that other new shows that got the greenlight from NBC last night include The Night Shift and Welcome To The Family.
