Sean T. Rayburn, operator of the Pixies official site, is heading the project to release three volumes of photo books. A Visual History, Volume 1 will consist of rare or unseen photos of the influential '80s band between 1985 and 1993.

Sean explained on the official Kickstarter site why he decided to start the campaign.

“Some of you may be wondering, ‘so Sean, WHY do you need a Kickstarter to put this project together?’" he said. "The answer is that book publishing is very expensive, especially to do it right. To make this a great project, I am meeting with hundreds of people from all over the world, people who have worked with the band, labels and press and managers, and roadies and fans. I am also going to be meeting with the band members themselves. And their families. Pretty much anyone who has a story and some photos or memorabilia, I am coming to see you.”

The visual history offers incentives to those who make a contribution. Incentives include a limited edition postcard, posters, and copies of the book. Rayburn also intends to include the names of the pledges within the book. With 21 days to go, $21,962 has been funded by 205 backers. As of now the only way to receive a copy of the book is to donate $75 or more.

Along with the rare photos, the book will include a letter that frontman Black Francis (a.k.a Charles Thompson) wrote to his father to explain his leaving school to form the Pixies. Francis bargained with his dad, saying that if the Pixies did not work out in one year, then he would go back to school. “It was something like 11 months and two weeks later that they got their record deal,” Rayburn said according to SPIN.

“I didn’t want to write a real history of the band because I feel like everybody knows that story. I just wanted to have a nice, visually pleasing presentable, big book of images and stuff from the band’s history,” Rayburn said to SPIN.

Rayburn is working on a website to accept submissions from fans with Pixies-related stories or anecdotes.
