Reese Witherspoon calls arrest and behavior ‘completely unacceptable’

Reese Witherspoon surprised fans last month when she was arrested for disorderly conduct when her husband Jim Toth was pulled over for suspected DUI in Atlanta. While her representatives quickly issued a statement apologizing for the incident, she appeared on Good Morning America and spoke about it with George Stephanopoulos.

When Toth was pulled over, Witherspoon went after the arresting officer, reportedly asking him if he knew who she was and promising that his name was going to be in the media. “I saw him arresting my husband and I literally panicked,” Witherspoon recalled. “I told him I was pregnant. I’m not pregnant. I said all kinds of crazy things.”

She continued, “It’s just completely unacceptable and we are so sorry and embarrassed...I think we made a mistake and it was something that will absolutely never happen again.”

According to USA Today, Stephanopoulos asked why they didn’t call a cab, which she agreed was something they absolutely should have done. “It was just poor judgment. And I think we made a mistake. It's something that will absolutely never happen again. Just bad judgment.”

She agreed that the incident didn’t go with her public persona as America’s sweetheart, especially because of what she told the officer. “I was so disrespectful to him,” the Mud actress said. “I have police officers in my family. I work with police officers every day. I know better. It’s just unacceptable.”

Witherspoon said that she has apologized to Atlanta police. She and Toth are set to appear in court this month.

The hardest part of the ordeal is explaining it to her three children. She and Toth are the parents on 7-month-old Tennessee and Witherspoon also has two children from her marriage to Ryan Phillippe. “We have to say when you make a mistake, you take responsibility and we are taking responsibility and doing everything in our power to make it right.”

Witherspoon currently appears in the film Mud, which is in limited release.
