Rolling Stones struggle to sell $600 tickets, forced to lower prices

In today’s tough economy, the choice between $600 seats to see 70-year-old musicians and feeding the family is pretty easy. That’s a lesson the Rolling Stones are learning today. While tonight’s Staples Center show might sell out, it won’t be because people rushed to buy $600 tickets.

The situation drew attention after blogger Bob Lefsetz noted how many of these expensive seats were still available.

According to Businessweek, the Anschutz Entertainment Group Inc. website shows that several $600 tickets are still available, just hours before the show. “To anyone not working in investment banking, these are extremely expensive tickets,” Pollstar magazine’s Gary Bongiovanni told Businessweek.

In fact, the Stones were forced to release more $85 tickets as the cheaper options sell out, notes The Guardian. A majority of the tickets go for $450 and $600 and that’s before the convenience fee.

AEG told Businessweek that they do expect the show to be sold out. “We fully expect Friday’s Staples Center show to be sold out and are very pleased with ticket sales for all upcoming shows,” a spokesman said.

The Stones’ 50 and Counting tour includes dates in Oakland, San Jose, Las Vegas, Anaheim, Toronto, Chicago, Montreal, Boston and Philadelphia. Since they performed in the New York area in November, they did not schedule any new dates there for the tour.
