The Doors’ Robby Krieger and John Densmore comment on Ray Manzarek’s death

The surviving members of the legendary rock group The Doors have both commented on the death of their former bandmate, keyboardist Ray Manzarek.

Manzarek died on Monday in Germany after a long battle with bile duct cancer, the musician’s publicist said. He was 74 years old.

Guitarist Robby Krieger issued a statement, which was published with the announcement of Manzarek’s death. “I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek today," he commented. "I'm just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him."

According to Jambands.com, drummer John Densmore made a rare public statement about his former bandmate. Densmore and Krieger and Manzarek had been embroiled in a court battle over the group’s name, but Densmore t=put that aside for a moment.

“There was no keyboard player on the planet more appropriate to support Jim Morrison’s words,” Densmore said. “Ray, I felt totally in sync with you musically. It was like we were of one mind, holding down the foundation for Robby and Jim to float on top of. I will miss my musical brother.”

The three musicians were together as the Doors up until 1972, making two records together after Jim Morrison’s death in 1971. Manzarek and Krieger had been touring together as The Doors for the past decade.
