Weinstein Company shows off scenes from ‘Grace,’ ‘Mandela,’ ‘Only God Forgives’ and JD Salinger documentary

The Weinstein Company showed off scenes from its latest films at Cannes on Friday, giving the press an early look at projects that will likely be key players once the Oscar season starts up. Scenes from Nicole Kidman’s Grace of Monaco, Madela with Idris Elba and Only God Forgives were shown, along with a part of the long awaited J.D. Salinger documentary.

Grace stars Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly and focuses on her time as the wife of Monaco’s Prince Rainier III, played by Eric Roth.

“We've made so many movies together,” Kidman, who is on the jury this year, said with Harvey Weinstein at her side, reports HitFix. “It's almost two decades of working with Harvey and I haven't been able to do it for awhile so I'm so glad that he decided that Grace was for him. Obviously, it's fantastic to be back here.”

She also praised the crew behind the film, especially director Olivier Dahan, “who I adore.” They then screened a single scene from Grace.

The trailer for Mandela followed, but didn’t really wow the press. Everyone’s ears perked up for Only God Forgives, the long-awaited follow up to director Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling’s acclaimed Drive. The film will be screened in full at Cannes, but Weinstein showed off a three minute clip that showcased Gosling’s co-star, Kristen Scott Thomas, who plays his mother.

Note: there is some very strong language in the following clip

The Guardian reports that Weinstein also showed a segment from writer Shane Salerno’s passion project, a documentary on Catcher in the Rye author Salinger. TWC won theatrical rights after PBS secured TV rights. PBS plans to air it in January 2014.

The clip showed interviews with Tom Wolfe, EL Doctorow and the late Gore Vidal. It hinted that there might be new revelations about Salinger’s life after 1965, when he withdrew from the public.
