‘Prometheus’ sequel still in the works, ‘Transcendence’ writer hired

While Prometheus wasn’t the runaway sci-fi hit Fox may have hoped for or the classic to revitalize the Alien franchise that fans hoped for, the studio and Ridley Scott are still interested in making a sequel. They have reportedly picked Transendence writer Jack Paglen for the project.

According to Variety and The Wrap, Paglen is in talks to write the follow-up. Damon Lindelof, who heavily re-wrote John Spathis’ original script for Prometheus, is not returning. Lindelof took the brunt of many complaints about how the original film unfolded.

Scott is expected to produce under the Scott Free banner, but it’s still unknown if he’ll take the director’s chair again.

Prometheus grossed $403 million worldwide and reportedly cost $130 million. While it started as a straight prequel to Scott’s 1979 classic Alien, it soon morphed into its own project and Scott said that Prometheus should be able to stand on its own as a sci-fi film. Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender’s characters both survived the first film, so they could be back depending on the plot for Prometheus 2.

Paglen wrote Transcendence, a sci-fi film with Johnny Depp and Rebecca Hall. Cinematographer Wally Pfister is making his directorial debut with the film and it’s set to open in April 2014.
