Brad Pitt explains bumps in the road making "World War Z"

Brad Pitt has been busy promoting his newest action thriller World War Z , and while there has been plenty of positive buzz surrounding the film, the hunky actor says making the zombie film was not very easy.

"It's a monster of a film," Pitt says of the film, which is a huge departure from the actor’s recent roles in “smaller, more intimate films.” World War Z is a take on the apocalypse, telling the tale of a United Nations investigator (Pitt) who must battle to save his family, and society as we know it, from a zombie pandemic.

The film has opened six months after its original release date, Indy Star reports, set back by reshoots of a new ending. Though Pitt says he’s “pretty proud” of the finished product, he has some qualms about his character name, Gerry Lane.

"Gerry Lane," Pitt chuckles. "One of the worst names in film ever. It was appropriate. I don't know why it's appropriate. Gerry with a 'G'. He's the anti-action hero. It's an anti-action hero name."

Despite knit-picky details with which Pitt takes issue, he says on the whole the film has come a long way since it’s original “atrocious” first cut.

"You see some first cuts and you go, 'Oh, it's everything you want it to be and more,'” Pitt explains. “It's working on certain levels that you didn't even understand when you were shooting it. Like, I had this feeling seeing Moneyball . And here was the exact opposite."

Fixing the “rank” film was not easy. Pitt brought in Lost creator Damon Lindelof to help “tear this thing apart and make it work.”

Rumors of tension between Pitt and director Marc Forster swirled once Lindelof entered the scene, but Forster was quick to dismiss the gossip to Vanity Fair , saying he is thankful for what Lindelof brought to World War Z .

“I didn’t feel like it was a big drama,” Forster said. “I feel like, yes, the ending didn’t work. Yes, we all thought it was going to work. Yes, we decided it’s not the right ending. Yes, we decided to change it and spend more money. Yes, it never happened to me before on any of my other movies. But I think this movie is more original and bigger and more special than I have ever done before.”
