Channing Tatum gives update on ‘Magic Mike’ sequel

Magic Mike was a surprise hit that few saw coming last summer and there’s been talks about a sequel ever since the Steven Soderbergh-directed film left theaters. Star Channing Tatum, who’s promoting White House Down now, gave an update on the project in a new interview.

Last summer, Tatum first confirmed that a sequel was in the works, with plans to make it on a bigger scale than Magic Mike. “We're working on the concept now. We want to flip the script and make it bigger,” he told Glamour at the time.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tatum said that he’s still pushing Soderbergh to return, even though the director says he’s done with the movies.

“I wish people would lobby him to finish what he started: ‘Come on, man! Stop being stubborn and come back,’” Tatum told THR. “I've said that to him, but he is a very fixed-in-his-ways guy, and if he says it, it is hard to change.”

As for the plot, Tatum said, “It will be a road-trip movie, and it will essentially be the movie that everyone thought the first one was going to be: crazy and fun and less slice-of-life and less drama.” He added that, “The first one, we had to make not so cheesy and campy; this one we are going to swing for the fences.”

If Soderbergh doesn’t come back, Tatum thinks that he might end up co-directing it with his producing partner, Reid Carolin. Another possibility is long-time Soderbergh collaborator Greg Jacobs, who was credited as a producer on Magic Mike.

Magic Mike was one of three films Tatum made in 2013 that grossed over $100 million domestically. It finished with $113.7 million.
