Children's museum in Florida denies same-sex couple standard family rate

A museum in Florida told a same-sex couple they would not be eligible for the family membership rate, which has spurred numerous online petitions calling to boycott Jacksonville’s Hands On Children’s Museum.

Karen Lee-Duffell tried to renew her membership, which she’s had for three years, at the standard family rate, but an employee denied her.

“She says 'oh wait no, you're going to have pay an extra ten dollars to add this other mom, you can't have two moms' and she points up at the sign, a family membership consists of one mom and one dad," Lee-Duffell said, First Coast News reports.

She added, "It really just feels like a punch in the gut when you go somewhere and it's kind of thrown in your face, we don't want to treat you equally and we're not going to make any effort to do that.”

The museum said in a statement that the memberships are “very specific” and do not offer exceptions. Since Florida doesn’t recognize same-sex marriage, they’re not legally held to provide the family a family rate if they don’t choose to.

Since the incident, a boycott has been created on Facebook, as well as a Change.org petition with over 2,000 supporters so far.
