Edie Falco, James Gandolfini's onscreen wife, mourns the loss of a 'tremendous man'

The world lost a television icon Wednesday when Sopranos actor James Gandolfini died after suffering a heart attack. Edie Falco, Gandolfini’s long running on-screen wife, has released a statement reacting to the loss of her beloved co-star.

According to E! News, Falco writes that she is “shocked and devastated by Jim's passing.”

“He was a man of tremendous depth and sensitivity, with a kindness and generosity beyond words. I consider myself very lucky to have spent 10 years as his close colleague,” she continues. “My heart goes out to his family. As those of us in his pretend one hold on to the memories of our intense and beautiful time together. The love between Tony and Carmela was one of the greatest I've ever known.”

Falco and Gandolfini starred as as husband and wife, Tony and Carmela, from 1999-2007. Tony and Carmela epitomized a couple working through some of the most difficult aspects of marriage including loss, hurt, jealousy, infidelity and that not-as-normal with Tony as the head of the mob.

Gandolfini suffered a heart attack in Italy, he was 51.
