Justin Theroux will star in Damon Lindelof’s HBO project ‘The Leftovers’

Justin Theroux, who is currently all over tabloids thanks to his relationship with Jennifer Aniston, is about to get even more attention. The writer/actor has landed the lead in Star Trek Into Darkness writer Damon Lindelof’s The Leftovers.

The Leftovers is Lindelof’s first TV project since Lost wrapped. It’s based on a 2011 novel by Tom Perrotta and is set in a post-apocalyptic world. The Rapture has just taken place and the show focuses on the survivors.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Theroux will star as Kevin Garvey, a police chief and father of two.

If HBO orders the show to go to series, it will also be a big return to TV for Theroux, notes The Hollywood Reporter. While he has had arcs on Parks and Recreation and Six Feet Under, he hasn’t had a starring role on TV since the 2000 CBS show The District.

Theroux is also known for his writing credits, including Tropic Thunder, Iron Man 2 and Rock of Ages. He also starred in 2012’s Wanderlust with Aniston.

Lindelof is co-writing the pilot with Perrotta and Warner Bros. TV is producing. Friday Night Lights director Peter Berg has signed on to direct the pilot. Berg, Ron Yerxa, Albert Berger and Sarah Aubrey are executive producing.
