Matt Smith will leave ‘Doctor Who’ at the end of 2013

After four years of playing the time-traveling doctor, Matt Smith will leave the British sci-fi series at the end of 2013.

Smith is the 11th actor to portray the doctor in the popular British series that has been on the air for almost five decades. Smith will be leaving after the show’s 50th anniversary special in November according to Los Angeles Times. The actor to replace Smith will appear in the Christmas special.

Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke,” Smith said in a news release explaining his departure. “I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.”

Smith was a fan favorite, who won Best Actor by readers of Doctor Who Magazine in 2010 and the Most Popular Male Drama Performance award in 2012 according to deadline. However, the show’s executive producer, Steven Moffat isn’t worried about a new leading man taking the spot of Smith. “The beauty of ‘Doctor Who’ is its incredible flexibility, anchored by this iconic simplicity,” he said. “All the things that work against a show’s longevity work for us. If people get tired of the Doctor, he regenerates. We bring in new companions before anyone can get bored. We can do any sort of episode we want anywhere we want in space and time.”
