Michael Jackson four years after death: wrongful death lawsuit still at center stage

Michael Jackson died four years ago today on June 25, 2013. While many fans will spend today listening to his music and remembering his legacy, the fact is that he still lives on, at least in court.

His mother Katherine Jackson and his children are suing concert promoter AEG for Jackson’s death. The trial has given the public an unprecedented look at the King of Pop’s final days, while the family tries to prove that his death was the fault of AEG for hiring Dr. Conrad Murray.

The civil trial has only proved to tarnish his image, experts who spoke with USA Today suggest. The trial ensures that we’re not talking about great albums like Off The Wall or Thriller today. Instead, we’re talking about how poor his health deteriorated in his final weeks.

“Michael Jackson worked hard his whole life to build a fabulous body of work and a wonderful legacy,” Diane Dimond, who wrote Be Careful Who You Love: Inside the Michael Jackson Case, told USA Today. “In death, his family is doing all the wrong things to tear that down. You see now in the AEG trial that Jackson was a basket case of his own making. The trial very well could be the last mark on the legacy sheet for him, and not in the positive column.”

The trial is now in its ninth week. Just last week, a taped deposition from Paris, Jackson’s 14-year-old daughter who tried to commit suicide, was shown to the jury. Paris was not there herself, since she had reportedly tried to commit suicide earlier this month.

CNN is reporting that Prince, 16, is going to testify Wednesday. That will follow testimony from a sports medicine expert and an expert in medical conflicts of interest. There has also been testimony from a sleep expert who claimed that Jackson went 60 days before his death without REM sleep, requiring propofol to give him the ‘feeling’ that he slept.

Jackson died at age 50.
