Shailene Woodley’s ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ role might be recast

On Wednesday, actress Shailene Woodley confirmed the news that she had been cut from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, even though her part was already filmed. While there was some speculation that her scenes might show up in Amazing Spider-Man 3, a report suggests that the Mary Jane Watson role might have to be recast.

Woodley said in an interview with EW that she was “bummed” by the news. She said that she completely understood the decision, adding, “MJ only appeared in a few scenes and I wouldn’t trade the experience of working with Andrew and Emma for three days on set for the world. Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing MJ until the next film.”

Director Marc Webb also said that he made a “creative decision to streamline the story and focus” on Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen Stacy’s (Emma Stone) relationship. “Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her,” he added.

Woodley became a major star thanks to her dramatic role in The Descendants with George Clooney in 2011 and since then, she’s been an in-demand actress. She is set to star in Divergent as Beatrice Prior. According to The Wrap, her commitment to that project may make her unavailable for shooting new MJ scenes for Amazing Spider-Man 3, which would mean that the role may have to be recast.

The news that Woodley’s role was cvut followed confirmation from Sony that Amazing Spider-Man 3 and Amazing Spider-Man 4 are coming. The films have been scheduled for June 10, 2016 and May 4, 2018, respectively.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theaters on April 17, 2014.
