Soledad O’Brien joins HBO’s ‘Real Sports’ after leaving CNN

Soledad O’BRien has left CNN, but she isn’t going very far. The award winning journalist is staying in the Turner Broadcasting fold, joining HBO Sports’ Real sports with Bryant Gumbel.

HBO confirmed the news on Wednesday. According to The Associated Press, her first story will focus on veterans who cope with post-traumatic stress disorder through martial arts. It will air later this month.

“It's exactly what I've been doing for a long time — telling stories about human beings and their struggles,” O’Brien said in a statement.

MediaBistro reports that O’Brien’s production company Starfish Media Group also reached a ‘first look’ deal with the network, promising to give HBO the first opportunity at scripted and long form programming ideas.

O’Brien had been hosting a morning show on CNN, but new president Jeff Zucker has put together a new morning show with Chris Cuomo and Kate Bolduan titled New Day. It premiered earlier this week.

She still hosts the In America series for CNN, which also often replays HBO documentaries.

HBO Sports president Ken Hershman called O’Brien a “perfect fit” for Real Sports, calling her “an extraordinary interviewer and storyteller, and we’re thrilled to be able to add her to a franchise where the emphasis is on finding and presenting thought-provoking stories in the diverse and ever-fascinating world of sports.”
