Sony planning ‘Captain Planet’ movie

Lately, the only thing Captain Planet has been remembered for is the source of those hilarious Don Cheadle videos on Funny Or Die.com. But Sony is going to try to change that with a movie based on the cheesy 1990s cartoon about a blue-skinned superhero who tried to keep the world environmentally safe with his teen sidekicks.

The news was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter and also confirmed by Entertainment Weekly. THR notes that Sony is in the final talks to secure the film rights to Captain Planet and the Planeteers. The film would be produced by Mark Gordon, Don Murphy and Susan Montford.

Turner Broadcasting and DIC Entertainment co-produced the original series. DIC is best known for also producing Inspector Gadget.

The group of teens all came from different parts of the world - North America, Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia and South America - and represented different elements. They teamed up to fight villains with great names like Verminous Skumm, Duke Nukem and Looten Plunder.

This is not the first time Captain Planet has been considered for a movie. Back in 2011, Murphy and Montford had actually been in talks to make a movie for Cartoon Network, but nothing happened. There were also attempts in the ‘90s while the cartoon was still popular, but nothing got beyond a script.

It’s still too early to tell who will play Captain Planet, but it Sony wants to be serious, it’s a good idea to stay away from Cheadle.
