Tony Awards: ‘Vanya and Sonia and Sacha and Spike’ named best play, ‘Kinky Boots’ wins best musical

The Tony Awards, which honor the best of Broadway’s past season, were last night, airing on CBS. How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris hosted the show, which saw Kinky Boots walk away with the most awards. The show, whose score was written by pop star Cyndi Lauper, won Best Musical.

Kinky Boots’ other wins came for Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics); Best Lead Actor in a Musical (Billy Porter); Best Choreography; Best Orchestrations and Best Sound Design for a Musical.

Vanya and Sonia and Sacha and Spike earned six nominations, but it only one won award - Best Play. The play was written by Christopher Durang.

While Kinky Boots’ six wins may sound like the show dominated the awards, it was only two more than Matilda: The Musical and Pippin, which both won four each. Matilda won Best Book for a Musical, while Pippin was named Best Musical Revival. Pippin’s Patina Miller won Best Lead Actress in a Musical.

The Best Play Revival went to Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. The production won two other awards. The Nance also won three awards.

“The greatest job on Earth. We are the ones who say it to their faces, and we have a unique responsibility,” Virginia Woolf actor Tracy Letts said in his acceptance speech, notes CBS News.
