Twisted Recap: 'Pilot'

On the pilot episode of Twisted, we were introduced to the main characters, learned a portion of the back-story and learned the definition of a sociopath.

The episode began with a flashback of the young Jo (Maddie Hasson) and Lacey (Kylie Burnbury). They were on the swing talking about how weird Danny Desai (Avan Jogia) was acting. They wondered if he was having family problems. Turns out that, yep, he was. He also murdered his aunt with a red jump rope. And it isn’t a flashback, it’s a nightmare for grown up Jo.

Danny, who was recently released from juvenile detention center, is starting his first day back at school as a 16-year-old outcast. Just as Danny walks in, Lacey (who has grown-up to be quite the Queen Bee) is talking to a reporter calling Danny a socio. And the nickname stuck. As for bullying goes, I’d pick being called socio over child-murderer and rope-boy.

Jo and Lacey, who are now in two different popularity levels and haven’t spoken to each other in years, meet up in the hallway before Danny arrives. They both admit that they have nightmares and were shaken up by his return.

But, let’s be honest here, they were 11-years-old and saw their friend with a rope. (At least in the flashback), I understand how traumatizing it must be to have your best friend be a murderer but still- all they saw was a jump rope.

When Danny tries to talk to them, they don’t react positively. But, saying ‘boo’ instead of hello is probably not the best way to start out a friendship. They shun him. The student body does as well. Danny, literally, has no friends.

I have to give Avan Jogia some credit. He can play a charming maybe-murderer very well. He plays this tragic character with such light it makes the show so much better.

Lacey invites Jo to a party and she politely declines and heads to class. Yet, she runs into Danny. Again, she shuts him out but leads him to their class together. As any TV show works, their class work seemed to intertwine with the plot of the episode. The class was discussing sociopaths. As the students learned in class, a sociopath is someone who doesn’t care about or have emotions. The class then believed that Danny was a sociopath.

While this is a new show, I hope the whole sociopath theme/nickname doesn’t stick. It is good for an episode or so, but repeating it over and over begins to lose its affect and that was in only an hour.

The question that was asked the entire episode was why Danny killed his aunt. He said he couldn’t tell. But, honestly, it better be a big deal for him to go down for murder and for me, as a viewer, to wonder about it.

At lunch, Lacey sat with her friends Regina (Karynn Moore; who is wonderfully slutty) and Sarita (Jamila Velasquez) and Regina said that Danny was cute and invited him to the same party that Lacey invited Jo to.

Regina, throughout the episode, was the highest note. She had one-liners that were brilliant comic relief. While all of the other actors got into their roles and played them wonderfully, Regina pulled it all together. Her flirting with Danny was what made him more likable as well.

Danny saw her necklace and complimented it. He asked where she got it and she said that it was a gift and she didn’t know.

Danny asked Jo to go with him to the party and she agreed.

Meanwhile, Danny goes home to talk to his mother, Karen, (Denise Richards) and he realizes that they are broke and they can’t leave his hometown even if they wanted to. Danny’s father also fell off a boat to his death so they are alone in the world.

When Danny gets to the party, Jo is drunk. Of course. And Regina hits on Danny (multiple times). Then, when Regina gets jealous of the attention that Jo is getting from Danny, she sets her up with a (hot) buff dude who she does a body-shot off. When hot-guy wants Jo to take her shirt off- she freaks out and Danny comes to save her. Of course.

When Danny walks drunken Jo home, Lacey drives up to drive them home. They drop Jo off then head to Danny’s house. They sit at Danny’s house and watch a movie and eat potato chips. After Lacey falls asleep, Danny covers her up with a blanket and receives a text from Regina. She says she knows why he killed her aunt.

He seemingly ignores it and goes to bed. Cut to Regina’s dead body. That familiar red necklace? Gone.

The next day, Jo finds out that Lacey spent the night and there was jealous. And the love triangle began.

At school, the principal collected the entire school and said that Regina had died and that they had gotten a grief counselor for them. Hot-guy from the party even called Danny out as the murderer.

Jo stood up and defended Danny. She wanted Lacey too as well but Lacey wouldn’t since she was asleep and Regina was her best friend. When the group finally starts to accept Danny, the police come to question him.

The episode ends on a mysterious note. Danny opens a photo book in his room. He sees a picture of his father on a boat, then his aunt with that red necklace on her neck. Then Danny closes the book and lays Regina/His Aunt’s red necklace down.

Did Danny kill Regina? Did Danny kill his aunt? And who will Danny choose; Jo or Lacey? These are the questions that will keep anyone tuning in.

Overall, this show seems to be a hit. The acting is spectacular and the plot line is wonderful. If you like Pretty Little Liars, you will love Twisted and all of the juicy secrets within.
