‘Dance Moms’ recap: Recital Rebellion

This was a hectic week on Dance Moms as the girls prepared for the Abby Lee Dance Company’s annual recital and posed for a magazine photo shoot.

According to the moms, recital week is more stressful than any competition week throughout the year. The tension started right off at pyramid when Paige was placed at the very bottom. Kelly complained about her daughter’s spot, saying that Paige didn’t mess up the group dance as much as Maddie messed up her solo. In response, Abby guilt-tripped Kelly by sarcastically agreeing with her and making a confused Maddie do pushups as a punishment. Mackenzie was at the top of the pyramid for winning first place in her solo division last week. Of course, Abby reminded the 10-year-old that “it’s hard to get to the top, but it’s even harder to stay there.”

After pyramid, Abby moved on to the assignments for the recital, and there sure were a lot of them. The girls would be learning a sweet new group dance entitled “Sugar Babies.” Additionally, each girl would be performing one of her old solos, except for Paige who would learn a new solo (which Kelly was none too happy about.) Abby explained that she wasn’t in love with any of Paige’s old solos and was sacrificing time out of her busy week to choreograph Paige something better for the recital. Brooke, along with a solo, would perform her song “Summer Love Song” at the recital. And the final performance went to… Jill? That’s right, Kendall’s mom would be performing a tango with her friend Jimmy! Abby also announced, to much excitement from the girls, that they would be doing a photo shoot for Dance Track magazine, and the dancer with the best picture would be chosen for the cover.

Paige was the last girl to rehearse with Abby after a long day of practice. After hearing her mother complain all day, Abby got right to the point, asking Paige, “What’s the deal with your solo?”

Paige sheepishly replied, “I though I would do an old solo.”

Abby was not too happy with that answer, and the next day at dress rehearsal she announced that she would give Paige’s new solo to someone else. When Abby asked for a volunteer, none of the dancers raised their hands. So, Abby chose to give an uncomfortable looking Maddie the job. That’s when Kelly stormed out with both of her girls, yelling, “No one has ever been given a new solo the day of the recital!”

Poor Brooke and Paige didn’t show up for the rest of the weekend due to their mother’s antics. They even missed the Dance Track photo shoot. Abby commented that it was a shame because she could’ve seen Paige winning the cover spot. Dance Track took the girls to a school-themed set and gave each of them a character to portray. Chloe was chosen for a rebel rocker, Maddie for a teacher’s pet (very fitting), Kendall for a mean girl, Mackenzie for a book worm, Asia for a girl with a “big reputation” (age inappropriate, anyone?), and Nia for a gymnast. The girls had a blast posing for the camera, but soon enough they had to stop the fun to get ready for the recital.

It was performance time, and Maddie’s solos were up first. She redid her cute tap solo from last week, and luckily this time her apron stayed on. Her new solo, entitled “Survivor” was very pretty and graceful.

Asia had a lot of pressure for her solo – this was her first ALDC recital, and Abby made sure to tell her that “In the dance world there’s only one first impression.” Asia walked onto the stage, and much to Abby’s horror, her pants were on backwards! Fortunately, no one else in the audience seemed to notice. Besides the costume slip-up, which Asia and her mom were reprimanded for later, Asia’s solo was adorable.

The rest of the solos went smoothly, and soon it was time for the group dance. With a quick costume change mid-dance from trench coats to pink frills, the girls did a great job as “Sugar Babies” from one of Abby’s favorite Broadway musicals. The number was fun and upbeat, and the dancers looked great together.

Last was the number we’ve all been waiting for – Jill’s tango. Abby laughed her head off as middle-aged Jill and her partner strutted around the stage. Jill did a good job, but she wouldn’t hurt from some tips from her daughter.

In the dressing room at the end of the day, a representative from Dance Track came to reveal the magazine’s cover girl. A black cloth was pulled away from the blown-up cover spread to reveal a sassy photo of… Kendall! Kendall was thrilled to finally be in the spotlight. Jill said she was shocked that the cover went to her daughter, not because she didn’t deserve it, but because Maddie and Mackenzie always seem to get the special spots.

Kelly and her daughters, of course, missed the whole ordeal. In the words of Asia’s mom Kristie, “Kelly freaking out and leaving is new to me, but according to the other moms it’s like getting your tires rotated –you do it once a year.” After Kelly’s blow up and disappearance, do you think her and her daughters will show back up next week? We’ll find out next Tuesday on Lifetime at 9/8 central!
