‘The Wolverine’ opens to $141 million worldwide, Woody Allen’s ‘Blue Jasmine’ scores in limited opening

The Wolverine scored a soft opening at the box office in North America, but the character’s international appeal was on full display with a huge international opening over the weekend. Meanwhile, on a much smaller scale, Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine garnered strong buzz with the best limited opening of 2013.

Hugh Jackman’s latest turn as the X-Men hero grossed $55 million in North America, notes The Hollywood Reporter. While that number is nothing to sneeze about, 20th Century Fox has to be excited to see its huge opening in foreign markets. The Wolverine grossed $86.1 million overseas, bringing its total to $141.1 million. That means that the $120 million film has already made its budget back.

The film slashed up a poor string of box office duds for Hollywood, including R.I.P.D., Turbo, The Lone Ranger and White House Down. Impressively, half of Wolverine’s total also came from 3D screenings.

“The A- CinemaScore and our excellent exit polls are a testament to the high-quality film that James Mangold and Hugh Jackman made. I think Wolverine has advanced to be a very compelling and complex character that audiences have really responded to,” Fox president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson told THR.

According to BoxOfficeMojo, The Conjuring fell to the No. 2 spot with $22.1 million in its second weekend. That’s great news for Warner Bros., since horror titles usually take nosedives in their second week. It looks like Saw creator James Wan has another hit on his hands.

Despicable Me 2 added $16 million, while Grown Ups 2 added $11.5 million. For Guillermo Del Toro fans hoping that Pacific Rim might do well in the long run, it’s bad news. The monster movie only added $7.5 million. Also worth noting, Fruitvale Station grossed $4.66 million in its first weekend in over 1,000 theaters.

Meanwhile, TheWrap notes that Blue Jasmine, the latest release from Allen, made $612,726 in just six theaters. It reached a per-theater average of $102,128, beating the last independent hit, Spring Breakers, for the best limited opening of the year. Jasmine has earned strong reviews, with buzz surrounding Cate Blanchett’s performance.
