Casey K's 'In Tine' album review

Casey K’s debut EP, In Tine, was released this past March and is a sound for sore ears. She uses the blend of her smooth alto voice and sweet tone to create a signature sound of her own. In the 7 songs on the EP, Casey K. shows her range with softer, more intimate songs like “Forgotten in the Moonlight,” as well as the power, strength, and technique in her vocals as heard in “Down in Flames,” and “Stay ‘til Sunday.”

At first, her sound may seem like a mixture of Norah Jones meets Sarah Bareilles and Adele vocals with the acoustic guitar, piano, light drum, and bass stylings of a John Mayer or Michael Bublé album, but there is something about the accent of Casey K. and the soulfulness her EP that is unmatched by any artist in her genre.

Casey K’s self-written songs display her light hearted personality, deep thought, and swollen heart. Drawing inspiration from her own life and her experiences living in Maui, Casey K’s most striking gift may be her lyrics.

Her lyrics, for example, for “Forgotten in the Moonlight,” are thoughtfully crafted:

“Leaves fall like blankets

My thoughts sleep underground
But don’t be mistaken
I don’t gotta think when I’m lying down
Don’t show me your scars until the sun rises
Pretend our troubles are
Forgotten in the moonlight”

Though Casey K. has been playing instruments, singing, and writing her entire life, this first EP took some time to put together. The journey to the release of this music was a long one, but well worth the wait. As a young girl she grew up in West Hollywood, and was heavily influenced by Jazz, Broadway, the music of her generation, and the musical stylings of her mother.

After high school, Casey K. attend USC where she earned a degree in Theatre while also working on her songwriting and learning the inner working of music production, guitar, and piano.

With college behind her, Casey K. asked old friend, Casaba Petocz, to partner with her on the EP. Petocz, a respected producer and engineer who has worked with greats such as Michael Jackson, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, and Etta James, was happy to accept the invitation.

With Petocz, Casey K. created her first music video on location in Paris for the song "Maureen" which was released this Spring.

The young and hopeful Casey K. has had her music featured on ESPN, teamed up with international DJ's, been featured on Monsters and Criticsand has experimented as a producer with all kinds of music, from Jazz to Rap.

Her most notable performances included those at the Austin SXSW,Bluebird Café in Nashville, the Hollywood House of Blues, The Triad Club in New York City. She has performed everywhere from the East Coast to Hawaii, and is sure to be heard across the states.

While Casey K. is by all means a new artist on the map, it won't be long until she emerges onto the larger music scene. Her easy going, coffee shop sound will undoubtedly grow into something more, as she uses the feedback from this album, both good and bad, to expand as an artist.
