Emmy nominations: ‘American Horror Story: Asylum’ earns 17 nominations, Kevin Spacey and ‘House of Cards’ gets recognition

Netflix’s House of Cards and Arrested Development have become the first series to originate exclusively from a streaming service to get Emmy recognition. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences nominated the political drama in nine categories, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama.

House of Cards stars Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright were nominated in the Outstanding lead actor and actress categories, but they’ll have some tough competition. Spacey is up against Homeland’s Damian Lewis, Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville, Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston, Mad Men’s Jon Hamm and The Newsroom’s Jeff Daniels.

Aside from Wright, the other nominees in the Outstanding lead actress in a drama category are Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery, Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss, Nashville’s Connie Britton, Scandal’s Kerry Washington, Homeland’s Claire Danes and Bates Motel’s Vera Farmiga.

The nominees for outstanding drama series are Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Homeland, House of Cards and Mad Men.

FX’s American Horror Story: Asylum earned the most nominations with 17. The anthology series is considered a miniseries, so it was nominated for Outstanding Miniseries or Movie. That category also includes History’s The Bible, Sundance’s Top of the Lake, USA’s Political Animals and the HBO movies Phil Spector and Behind the Candelabra.

Candelabra earned 15 in total and Michael Douglas will be a favorite in the Outstanding Lead Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie category.

One the comedy side, the outstanding comedy series nominees are The Big Bang Theory, Girls, Louie, Modern Family, 30 Rock and Veep. Speaking of 30 Rock, the show’s final season nabbed 15 nominations total, with Tina Fey getting a nod for Outstanding Lead Actress in a comedy.

Netflix’s Arrested Development revival did earn three nominations, including one for Jason Bateman as Outstanding lead actor in a comedy. His competition includes Jim Pasons (The Big Bag Theory), Don Cheadle (House of Lies), Matt LeBlanc (Episodes), Louis C.K. (Louie) and Alec Baldwin (30 Rock).

The nominees for Outstanding lead actress in a comedy are Fey, Laura Dern (Enlightened), Lena Dunham (Girls), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), Amy Poehler (Parks & Recreation) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep). It is interested in that Dern got a nomination, since HBO has since cancelled Enlightened.
