Joe Conley, ‘The Waltons’ actor, dies at age 85

Joe Conley, who starred on the 1970s TV series The Waltons, has died. He was 85-years-old.

According to The Los Angeles Times, Conley died at a Newbury Park, California care facility, his wife Louise, confirmed. He was battling dementia.

Us Weekly reports that Conley played shopkeeper Ike Godsey on The Waltons from 1972 until the show ended in 1981. He participated in made-for-TV movie reunions. The show was based on the Earl Hamner Jr. book Spencer’s Mountain, set in Virginia during the Great Depression.

He was born in Buffalo, New York in March 1928 and served with the Army in the Korean War. Before fighting in the war, he moved to California in hopes of becoming an actor and continued to pursue the dream when he returned. He also sold real estate in the San Fernando Valley.

Conley’s long career in film and television began in the mid 1950s. One of his last roles came in the Tom Hanks film Castaway, playing the character Joe Wally.

He made other appearances in shows like Knight Rider, The Brady Bunch, Green Acres, Dragnet and The Beverly Hillbillies
