Kriss Kross’ Chris Kelly died of drug overdose, autopsy says

Official autopsy results show that Kriss Kross rapper Chris Kelly did die of a drug overdose in May.

Kelly, 34, was pronounced dead on May 1 after an apparent drug overdose at his Atlanta home. Two months later, Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office in Atlanta said that the toxicology reports confirmed that Kelly had a mix of drugs in his system at the time of his death, notes The Associated Press.

Betty Honey of the Medical Examiner’s office wouldn’t confirm the exact drugs in his system, but it was reported that he used a mix of cocaine and heroin the night before his death. His mother, Donna Kelly Pratte, and his uncle admitted to police that he had an “extensive history of drug use,” according to a police report.

“To millions of fans worldwide, he was the trendsetting, backwards pants-wearing one-half of Kris Kross who loved making music. But to us, he was just Chris – the kind, generous and fun-loving life of the party,” a statement from his mother and Def Jam records read after news broke of his death. “Though he was only with us a short time, we feel blessed to have been able to share some incredible moments with him. His legacy will live on through his music, and we will forever love him.”

Kelly and Chris Smith performed as Kriss Kross and scored a hit with “Jump” in the early 1990s. They never were able to match the success of that single and their first album, but their other hits included "Warm It Up," and "Tonite's tha Night.”
