Relient K 'Collapsible Lung' - CD Review

Relient K, an American rock band, has released their newest album titled Collapsible Lung on July 2nd.

The band dives right back into their pop-punk roots with their first song on the album titled “Don’t Blink.” It’s a catchy number with a chorus that makes you want to sing your lungs out while driving down the highway. The lyrics to this song are all about making sure you don’t let life pass you by; it’s relatable and catchy and guaranteed to get stuck in your head for the next couple of days. “Gloria” is another song that falls more on the punk side of the pop-punk genre. It’s raspy and raw, and, for Relient K, it has an entirely different sound than anything else this band has produced. It’s one of the strongest songs on the album.

The album’s softer songs, such as “Lost Boy” stick close to the old school Relient K. It’s cheesy and adorable, which are all the reasons that make this song one of the best ones on the track. The song that truly reminds me of original Relient K songs is the 10th track titled “Sweeter.” They slowed the pace down, bringing out the piano just like they used to back in the Mmhmm days.

The album’s title song “Collapsible Lung” is one of the songs that stood out to me on the album. It’s slower, but not softer, and doesn’t stray away from solid pop-punk. Unlike “Gloria,” which sounded way different than what Relient K is known for, “Collapsible Lung” sounds like the Relient K we know and love but with an edgier kick to them.

Another song that stood out to me as different was “Can’t Complain.” It had a hardcore summer feel to it. The lyrics, rhythm and melody kept the song light-hearted, reminding one of a relaxing summer day spent at the beach.

It seems as though their second track “Boomerang” will be the band’s “dance song.” Every pop-punk album these days seems to have at least one of these – a song that strays away from the punk side of the genre and brings out the best part of the pop genre. The track isn’t that bad for a “dance song.” It does the trick to get your head bobbing and your feet shuffling, but it’s definitely not the best track on the album. Just like “PTL,” which is too slow for dancing but features heavy electronic noise, I found myself skipping past these “pop-ish” songs. The only “pop-ish” song I truly enjoyed was the last track on the album titled “That’s My Jam” which features Owl City. Let’s just say that that song is indeed my jam.

All in all, the album was . . . good. Not the best, but definitely not the worst. The best songs on the album seemed to have stood out because they didn’t stick to the typical Relient K format that was heavily featured in their 2004 album Mmhmm, but perhaps a change is exactly what this band needed.
