South Korean flight crashes at landing in San Francisco, two dead, many injured

Asiana Airlines flight 214 arriving from Seoul crashed during its landing at the San Francisco International Airport at about 11:36 a.m. Saturday.

According to ABC News, two people have been reported dead, at least 22 are in critical condition, and more than 60 people are still unaccounted for.

Eyewitnesses of the crash say it appeared the plane lost control before its landing and the tail hit the ground and flew off, before bursting into flames. Passengers were seen jumping down the emergency inflatable slides on the sides of the plane to escape the vicious flames.

"I mean we were sure that we had just seen a lot of people die. It was awful," said Stephanie Turner, an eyewitness of the crash. "And it looked like the plane had completely broken apart. There were flames and smoke just billowing."

Rachael Kagan, the spokeswomen of San Francisco General Hospital, reported that their hospital was treating many critical injuries including burns, broken bones, and internal injuries. Victims include two children and many adult patients ranging from the ages of 20-40.

Huffington Post reported that the National Transportation Safety Board is planning to send a team of investigators to investigate the cause of the crash and determine if the pilot is at fault.

Flights headed to the San Francisco International Airport were brought to other nearby airports to land, and the airport was closed for at least three hours.

Asiana is the second largest South Korean airline. It recently joined the Star Alliance, owned by United Airlines, in an effort to expand its presence in the U.S.
