The nation reacts to the death of Helen Thomas

The death of White House veteran journalist, Helen Thomas, has brought about many responses. .

The 92-year-old, who worked as the longest White House journalist from 1961 under President John F. Kennedy to 2010 under President Barack Obama, was known for her fearlessness and diligence, as previously reported by TheCelebrityCafe.com. She will be remembered for her legendary career nationwide, as several fellow journalists and others reacted to her death via Twitter and other social media tonight.

According to The Huffington Post, President Barack Obama stated he was “saddened,” by Thomas’s passing, saying, “Michelle and I were saddened to learn of the passing of Helen Thomas. Helen was a true pioneer, opening doors and breaking down barriers for generations of women in journalism. She covered every White House since President Kennedy’s, and during that time she never failed to keep presidents – myself included – on their toes. What made Helen the “Dean of the White House Press Corps” was not just the length of her tenure, but her fierce belief that our democracy works best when we ask tough questions and hold our leaders to account. Our thoughts are with Helen’s family, her friends, and the colleagues who respected her so deeply.”

Nancy Pelosi tweeted, “My thoughts & prayers are with the family of the legendary Helen Thomas who showed that a woman could not only do the job but do it better.”

According to CNN, George Stephanopoulos, political advisor and ABC reporter tweeted, “Rest in peace Helen Thomas. We sparred. We laughed. I so admired her tenacity.”

MSNBC reporter, Andrea Mitchell tweeted, “Helen Thomas made it possible for all of us who followed: woman pioneer journalist broke barriers died today wld have been 93 nxt month RIP.”

Ann Curry of NBC news quoted Thomas in a tweet, writing, “’Without a free press, there can be no democracy.’ – Helen Thomas.”

In her long and successful career, fellow journalists, the Presidents she worked for, and viewers alike loved Thomas, for she asked the tough questions and dug out the grueling answers. In her 92 years, her main criticism was for what some refer to as her anti-sematic remarks in 2010, telling Jews to “get the hell out of Palestine,” which she later apologized for, explaining, “They do not reflect my heartfelt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon.”

Thomas will surely be missed by the journalism world, the White house, and the American people.
