Wendi Deng hires new lawyer for divorce from Rupert Murdoch

News Corp. head Rupert Murdoch and Wendi Deng’s divorce took a new turn on Monday when Wendi hired a new lawyer to handle the proceedings.

Murdoch, 82, filed for divorce from Deng in June, filing the papers in New York State Supreme Court. The documents stated that the “relationship between husband and wife has broken down irretrievably.”

According to The New York Times, Deng, 44, has hired the well-known New York lawyer William D. Zabel, who has experience with big divorces. He represented Jane Beasley Welch during her rocky split from former General Electric CEO John F. Welch.

After the news broke, Christopher Giglio, a spokesman for Deng, confirmed the news, but didn’t say anything further. Still, sources for CNBC say that Deng is hoping this will be an “amicable divorce.”

Murdoch and Deng had been married for 14 years and did sign a prenup. CNBC reports that under the agreement, Deng would receive under $20 million. Her team is hoping to get more from Murdoch, whose estimated worth is $11 billion. They are looking for child support for their two young children and will have to sort out joint property.

Murdoch also just split News Corp. into two companies, with News Corp. remaining the publishing arm and creating, 21st Century Fox which is the entertainment group.
