‘Law & Order: SVU’ covers Trayvon Martin shooting and Paula Deen scandal in one episode

It seemed inevitable that Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, the last surviving Law & Order series, would cover the Trayvon Martin shooting. But the show isn’t just going to cover that. No, to make it even more interesting, a Paula Deen-esque scandal is added to the mix.

BuzzFeed posted several photos from the set of the show, which films in New York. There’s a scene with Ict-T and Richard Belzer holding a card with Martin’s photo. The site also revealed that Jeffrey Tambor and Cybill Shepherd were there, with Tambor as an attorney for Shepherd’s character.

According to the report, it looks like Shepherd is George Zimmerman and Paula Deen rolled into one. She is accused of shooting a black teenager and she’s also a celebrity chef. The slain teen is named Mechad, as seen on signs held by extras in a protest.

Leslie Odom, Jr. (Smash) and Sonja Sohn (The Wire) will also appear in the episode.

“[Jeffrey] Tambor is a defense attorney representing a very high-profile celebrity woman chef who thought she was being pursued by a rapist and turned around it was a teenager. And she shot him,” Executive Producer Warren Leight confirmed to Entertainment Weekly. “There’s a lot of stop and frisk elements to that as well.”

The SVU team was also divided on doing the show. “When the script was published it became a litmus test for everybody here,” Leight said. “It was really interesting to see people read that script and have different interpretations about who did what and whether or not they deserved prison for it. It was fascinating.”

SVU’s 15th season kicks off on Sept. 25 at 9 p.m. with a two-hour episode on NBC.
