'America's Got Talent' - Week 4 - Rank the Contestants

Outside of opera singers and choirs, the singers have struggled to make a strong impact. Who deserves to make it to the next round?

12) Tummy Talk - The silly opening was a waste of time but a nice use of Radio City's lift mechanism. While the judges thought that the addition of actual drums hindered the performance, I thought it was a nice touch to show the degree of musicality of the group. Unfortunately, the act is a one-shot performance and their comedy style isn't something I find humorous. My Grade: D

11) David Ferman - David tried to up his ante by also adding some charisma and showmanship in the beginning of his act, but instead came off looking like he was nervously trying to read his script and zoom through it as quickly as possible. The buildup was good, but the execution was really boring. It was too quick and while the balls were on fire, it was a basic juggling technique. My Grade: C-

10) Champions Forever - The huge family has a cute story and has talent with both basketballs and unicycles, but I just don't understand how the two really can meld together. My biggest concern is their similarity with the Chicago Boys and I'd rather see the Chicago Boys continue to injure their contestants as they try harder tricks. The synchronized unicycling was an interesting choice because they covered the stage floor really well but it looked like it should have been more of an outside routine. I wanted them to do something else after the unicycles, but they never did. My Grade: C

9) Sensetion - The 3D video mapping dancers at least admitted that Fighting Gravity, Team iLuminate, and Lightwire Theater. It seems like the group also lost a dancer. They had a technical snafu with one guy's lights not working on his outfit. They continued on, but it was massively distracting. The dancing was okay, but not as groundbreaking as Team iLuminate. The visuals were stunning, but looked like they were on the same level of tellAvision who didn't make it through. My Grade: C-

8) The Robotix - The band was good, but I don't get a connection to them or have any emotional appeal. They had the right the amount of confidence and crowd command, but it just wasn't for me. My Grade: B-

7) Chloe Channell - The tomboy country girl’s votes is going to get split with Jimmy Rose. I thought that Chloe was being eaten by both the staging and the volume of the backing track. It was good that Chloe was having fun with the song because it wasn't the most age appropriate choice. There was a minor vocal hiccup which didn't help, but it didn't affect her confidence. My Grade: B

6) 3Penny Chorus & Orchestra - The orchestra has been a YouTube hit with "Call Me Maybe" so their attempt at "We are Never Getting Back Together" felt smart on paper as a sequel. I appreciated the increased theatrical presence with the lights on the bows. The choice of song had a good comedic undertone to the performance; the tone maintained the youthfulness that this group aims for to reach a wider audience. I appreciated the act much better than the judges and I think that creating a strong orchestra-pop setlist would be wonderful to watch in a full show format. My Grade: B+

5) Taylor Williamson - Taylor's New York City-inspired routine was hit or miss. I was a fan of the "comedian with a checklist" concept, but he kept trying to drill in the "homeless people read" jokes. His comedic timing is cute and his awkward styling can work in different situations; I do think Radio City Music Hall swallowed him up and the audience was only standing because they were told to. My Grade: B+

4) Jimmy Rose - Our country coal miner/military man was given the last spot to perform and unlike Marty Brown, he didn't choke. His performance was fine, if it was in the middle of a full set. It didn't have any pow and felt like it ended abruptly. He has the storyline and confidence, but it was too campfire for me. My Grade: B

3) Aerial Ice - The skaters are true professionals. They increased their scale perfectly for Radio City and I liked that the tricks were on different heights. The act was dynamic and visually stunning to watch but I think the choice of camera affected how TV viewers appreciated the routine. It was even pretty to watch the people come down from the ropes at the end. My Grade: B+

2) Timber Brown - Timber decided to not go with a pole based act and instead displayed a different side of his acrobatics, but it made me miss the monkey-like way he could climb up the pole. I loved that he gained insane amounts of speed and looked like he was having fun on his performance, though his last move was him spinning in a circle really fast. My Grade: A-

1) Cami Bradley - The "shy singer" picked an arrangement for Cher's "Believe" that was beautiful, but a bit sleepy. She picked up some extra power near the end of the performance, but did she captivate the audience? She was saddled near the middle of the show and I fear that people would forget her. My Grade: A
