No-Spoilers Plot:
Karou has always known the world is a little stranger than most people think. She lives with a foster family that aren’t quite human, and while the door to their house usually lets her out near her art school in Prague, sometimes it sends her to Africa or India to buy animal teeth for her foster father. But until her house burns down, she never guesses that her family is made up of demons, and the same power they use to turn her hair blue is being used in a battle against angels—including Akiva, beautiful avenging warrior who keeps showing up in her life. Together, Karou and Akiva face the mysteries of her past, an incredible, war-torn world, and the truth of devils and saviors.

The Long and Short:
Imaginative in description, if not in plot, the romance and action of the plot make this book hard to put down, while the story leaves readers on edge for the sequel. “Daughter of Smoke and Bone” will transport you to an otherworldly Europe with ease, bringing lush landscapes and complex characters to life. But this isn’t a light children’s story—it’s an urban gothic, with plenty to satisfy older readers as well.
