Best of the Web, 8-8

Disclaimer: these may not be the most timely findings, but they are things that have just been discovered this week.

Cute: This goofy cat
and the entire Dutch website it came from. You don’t need to understand Dutch to enjoy Froot !

Yummy: The end of summer is coming, and it’s our duty to live these last few weeks to the fullest. That means picking (or buying) ripe peaches, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and the rest of the fruits that are best in the summer. Which means finding a way to use them Which means using this SquawkFox recipe for mini personal pies. It’s delicious, it works for any filling, it’s easy, it’s cute…the only downside is that it can get a bit messy in baking, so make sure to put the pies on a pan for when the filling bubbles up.

Fun: I know that not everyone is a die-hard Potterhead (isn’t that what the Harry Potter fans call themselves?) BUT you don’t have to be a crazed fan or even a kid to enjoy
Pottermore. You don’t even have to have read the books, because part of the game is retelling the story in an interactive, illustration-focused way. You’ll be sorted (with a legit quiz by J.K. Rowling herself), buy school supplies in Diagon Alley, and be chosen by a personalized wand. There’s also lots of extras with new information for the interested, and a few YouTube messages from J.K. Rowling or her characters like the one below.

Feminist: As usual, there seemed to be an infinite number of articles I could have chosen from, but the two best of the best are from The Guardian and Jezebel. The first is about what happened when girls in England decided to start a feminist club at their school, and also happens to be a very good argument for why feminism is still important. The second is about frat “bros” starting a “relatively small hedge fund,” and it made me hate capitalism a little bit.

Awesome: The Fashion Project is a very cool high-end resale website that sorts its items by collections (i.e. nautical theme) or by designer (Burberry, Chanel, Coach…). It is resale, but all items are certified from the designer and like new—AND all proceeds go directly to charities. When you mouse over an item (say a Prada handbag) you can see where it will go (TheOneFund for the Boston Marathon victims, for example). The prices are pretty good for haute couture, and you just have to create an account!
