Foam finger inventor says Miley Cyrus ‘degraded honorable icon’

Miley Cyrus’s performance with Robin Thicke at the MTV VMAs last Sunday involved Cyrus rubbing a foam finger between her and Thicke’s legs. Steve Chemlar, who created the first prototype of a foam finger, thought their act was degrading to his invention.
Chemlar made the first foam finger in 1971 when he created a large paper-mache No. 1 finger to cheer on his Iowa high school’s basketball team, according to Fox Sports.
When Chemlar saw Cyrus’s interpretation of how to use his foam finger, he said, “She took an honorable icon that is seen in sporting venues everywhere and degraded it.”
Cyrus’s VMA performance has been criticized all over the internet ever since Sunday night, according to LA Times. As well as using a foam finger in suggestive ways, Cyrus grinded on Thicke and her backup dancers while sporting nude-colored, plastic undergarments.
Chemlar commented, “Fortunately, the foam finger has been around long enough that it will survive this incident. As for Miley Cyrus, let’s hope she can outlive this event and also survive.”
